1. Course

1. The Gift

1989

Michael's passion for calligraphy goes back to his 21 th birthday. His approach is primarily self-taught: his sister gave him a box containing a fountain pen and a method of calligraphy.

From the first moment, he finds that the method, as well as specialized books, are designed for right-handed. Now Michael is left!

2. First Competition

1989-1990

Michel is preparing its first competition only, based on three articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1789.

1990

An important meeting was the year 1990: Michel discovers Ductus, the first association of French calligraphy. The association advocates a thorough job of calligraphy "Chancellor" and promotes meetings between calligraphy lovers, professional calligraphers and graphic designers ... Michael is so aware of the layout, to set colors and techniques of calligraphy. It is through Ductus he met Chinese calligraphers and great French masters such as Claude Mediavilla and Jean Larcher.

Along with Claude Mediavilla, Michel became convinced that he must persist in this path and find the will to move forward by itself, in particular by establishing its own method of calligraphy for left. Michael is training hard for two hours a day for more than three years.

3. Gestures

1993

A one-week course with Bernard Arin, the Scriptorium, St. Martin Key (on the outskirts of Toulouse), Michel consolidates in its approach and results to continue to work alone: "The body language."

This step also marks a new beginning with new ambitions calligraphy. Following this course, Michel decided to train as a DTP, school Estienne. This training complements the previous graphic work by adding the concepts of design and manufacturing.

This training is also a place of discovery: the character, composition, typographic rules (with Pierre Duplan, a recognized specialist in the and layout).

4. Learning the technique

1993-1996

Michel multiplies works: compositions of primers, essays and poems on various important work of the Twinning Charter between the cities of Moissy-Cramayel (Seine-et-Marne) and Busteni (Romania). Through his research, Michael acquires a certain power that allows it to address new areas of experimentation: colors, materials, formats, techniques ...

7. Changing

1997-2003

Second meeting of importance: the association "the Aractère." In a relentless pursuit of new techniques, and with the help of his teacher Kitty Sabatier, Michel develops a technique for left-handed. Since 1997, it will continually look for new tools to expand the investigation of his creations. Gradually, it uses new instruments: the Coca-Pen (pen formed from a can of Coca-Cola), pigments, gauze, sand, plaster and gold leaf. These tools open up new horizons and allow it to expand its inception. Michel then the deep impression of having discovered his true path and feel in complete harmony with his calligraphic sign.

8. Approach to building Jewish

2004 to date ....

2. Techniques

"A large sum approach to the freedom of the sign"

"This new element conferred an unexpected mystical dimension"

Colors

When he was at ease in the control of the sign, Michel clung to diversify its color, with a new dimension of learning sign and proportional signs in space.

Acrylic paint

First it was acrylic paint, with mixtures of primary colors of pigments, using brushes, rollers and Drawing gum. This painting is created directly based binders and pigments primary mediums. It allows a great deal of natural creativity of funds (relief, effect of craters) with binders glossy and matte.

The Coca-Pen (Cocopen)

EXHIBITION - PROGRAMME 2010 - ASSOCIATIONS - COMMUNITY

Michel D'Anastasio "Let there be light!"
Hebrew Calligraphy Exhibition of the October 5 to 30
Library of the University Paul Verlaine-Metz, Ile du SaulcyC'est first one of the members of our association, which had a "thunderbolt" for the work of a young calligrapher: Michel D'Anastasio . Within the associations, the blows of heart is often communicate, sometimes they share. It was well communicated and widely shared. Second, the benefits of the web, contacts, images sent, the various exhibitions that took place in France and around the world: Belgium, Malta, Russia, India, succeeded to convince us of the interest of go further, or rather to bring the work up close. We wanted the public to enjoy messin with the beauty of the Hebrew calligraphy, its dynamism and its technical findings. We had to expose him to Metz and find space adéquat.C is still our same friend, passionate about the first hour, which was able to find partners and location. Indeed, approached and conquered by the artistic quality, Madam Director of the Joint Service documentation from the University Paul Verlaine, Metz, agreed to present the work of Michel D'Anastasio, the university library, from 5 to October 30. This brief account of a "making of" our program does not stop there. In May 2010, Michel D'Anastasio outlined in the Jerusalem, Prague. By a happy combination of calendars, some members of the association just went there. It was decided, of course, to go see the exhibit soon. Better than a discovery, it was a glare! The calligraphic gesture with the energy that he calls and lets us see the traces seeking sensitivity so strong and inspired. The creation of the work, which makes the theme, which is the source and the one at work seems to be gaining viewers. All this takes us away and ahead of us and in ourselves. But above all, surprise is tangible and physical in the calligraphy of D'Anastasio, the Hebrew characters illuminate the viewer. An abstract of the functions of light in the history of art is, simply, be combined with modernity, with an efficiency that does not use pointless. The bright blue springs from the table like a stream of light that would make our inner sky. In the sweetness of honey soothing the delicious reds, saffron and orange-brown spread in us and fluid in the form of letters that announce a Promised Land.

Calligraphy, a modern gesture

Michel D'Anastasio is 42. He practices as an artist and calligrapher in Paris for ten years. His work focuses on the harmony of the Hebrew and Latin letters as well as abstract signs. Here's how his path was outlined.

After studying calligraphy for 16 years with renowned professors, Michel d'Anastasio chose to escape from the conventional to create his writing style. The gesture is released, but accurate. The sign is king ...

His style was born, only because Michael is left handed and he does not write with traditional instruments. A pen, he prefers the Cola-Pen (metal recovery of the famous soft drink, carefully cut and folded like a knife) or toothpicks in goose. Through the pigments of various colors and materials (gauze, sand, gold leaf, gum arabic, watercolors), Michel highlights the traditional way of former Maltese texts, a way for him to reconnect with the web history of its origins, including her parents so much. You have to look far to work and then get close and watch closely to perceive, even more, the richness and beauty of line.

Michel then the deep impression of having discovered his true path and feel in complete harmony with his calligraphic sign. As artistic director of visual communication, it creates logos and distinctive designs using calligraphic images to build graphics, wall stickers and decorative items. Its creation calligraphic "Decomotion" was chosen for the publication of "designanddesign.com" The Book Design of 2008 ".

Approach to building Jewish

Michel enjoys a visit to Malta, when the country of his ancestors celebrated its entry into the European Union, to conduct genealogical research. He then becomes aware that some of his family is of Jewish origin. During a trip to Israel a few months later, Michael feels an attraction to Hebrew culture. Itinerary of a Maltese based

Maltese-born artist in Paris

Between Paris and Malta: the birth of an artist

Birth of a calligrapher

In the veins of Michel D'Anastasio flows the blood of his ancestors. Maltese in Tunisia, it is nevertheless born in France, while still keeping the nostalgia of the land of his ancestors. This nostalgia is born the desire to paint. The genesis of his passion for calligraphy dates back to 1989 and since then it has continued to expand, thanks to his fierce desire to give meaning and shape. This passion was nurtured in contact with great masters of calligraphy, French and Chinese, which he crossed on his way, and who taught him to love the precision of movement and noble materials. But this passion has also grown in the silence of his studio, where every evening he found the white of the canvas and paper, and sought a pictorial language that was his. Gaucher, and uprooted self, he has to do with these shortcomings a source of creativity and freedom: it reinvents a gesture and new forms. It exalts the natural materials, pigments and sand, experimenting with new trails, incorporating in his works the lightness of gauze or roughness of the plaster, creating a field of its own, intimate geography of craters, valleys and ridges lunar deep. And in this respect, the Latin letters draw signs sensual and spiritual at once. The ancient walls of Bruges, the sleeping beauty, have already received in December 2003 his works, marked by time and the memory of his own.

Pick 'Malta, flower of the world "...

For the work of Michel D'Anastasio also talks about uprooting and exile. It is a tribute to the island of Malta, repeatedly traveled, crossed, pillaged, conquered and abandoned. Tribute to the land cracked with thirst, the red sand beaches, the clay hills, its barren rocks found on his canvases, covered with reliefs, cuts and signs incised into the material . Tribute to the colors of Malta, red ocher, burnt earth, deep blue sky and sea, sunny colors, too, a light that burns and caresses. Tribute to the Maltese poets, and Dun Karm Ruzar Briffa, who sang exile, dislocation, pain in Malta but also the sensual beauty and lust for life. Tribute to the tongue, where sweetness confluence America and the strength of Semitic languages. Tribute to his own ancestors finally ...

Singing exile

One day, the calligrapher back from the beach Ramla Bay (Gozo) a bit of red sand and this sand to deposit on some of these paintings. Here he again accosted on the beach. Now he wants to go to the land that is in him, and host passage, that language that he calligraphed hard, they made him. Through these letters incised in the matter, he returned to his past and reminds Maltese, at a time when Malta is open to Europe that the island has no borders. On the other side of the sea, there, under the gray sky of Paris, an artist speaks of its shores and its past.

Michel d'Anastasio: the story of a dream come true

For its 21 years of Michael Anastasio receives an unusual birthday gift: a box containing a pen and ink. The story begins!

Self-taught for the first 3 years, Michel rose contest contest and first joined the French association of calligraphy: Ductus. At the heart of this association, Michel will meet with great master calligraphers, such as Jean Claude Mediavilla and Larcher, with whom he decides to take private lessons. Her teachers, convinced by his talent, the push to continue in calligraphy, although left-handed. The passion is there, and at a rate of 2 hours daily, Michel has worked hard his technique and his body language. During this period, multiplied Michel classic calligraphic works, was introduced to Chinese calligraphy and performs compositions including ABC, work on various poems or various texts (Declaration of Human Rights, twinning charter between two cities, ...). It's been eight years since 1997 when Michel calligraphy he met Kitty Sabatier, French calligrapher of renown. This meeting is crucial. With Kitty, Michel will develop a technique for left-handed calligraphy. It will give him the desire to free the sign in and out of conventional calligraphy. It was then that he would seek new tools to write the Coca-Pen and the toothpick in goose, for example. With its variety of learning and experience, Michel begins, in 1998, to involve the natural pigments and materials (plaster gauze, sheets of copper gilt, gold leaf and sand) to enrich his creations. Michel then the deep impression of having discovered his true path and feel in complete harmony with its sign. It can now deal with his secret ambition: to express on canvas his origins Maltese speak with his parents since childhood and share them with the greatest number. In 2003, a chance meeting on a site of Maltese poetry, Michel meets Catherine Camilleri, brilliant student of foreign languages and a member of the association "Poezija Plus", which will become a loyal friend and accomplice of work essential to the translations. With Catherine, Michel chose several texts or expressions of Maltese poets, such as Dun Karm and Ruzar Briffa. He then began work editing of these texts, with the sensitivity of a Parisian artist who dreams of Malta continuously ...

"... Under the influence Kultura", the title of his Franco-Maltese double exposure, Gozo and Malta, is a kind of wink ... Maltese culture today is a culture steeped in various cultures of the peoples who colonized the archipelago. The culture of Michel, meanwhile, is steeped in French culture and Maltese ... come full circle!

The exhibitions are organized around three themes:

Malta ... from colonization to independence,

Malta ... religion,

Malta ... poetic evocations.

Some paintings exhibited this year in Malta have already been presented in Belgium (2003, Artonivo Gallery, Bruges) and in France (2004, FIAP Jean Monnet Centre, Paris, at the invitation of Mr. Silvio BUSSUTIL, former Ambassador of Malta in Paris to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the independence of Malta, the presence of Mr Jason Azzopardi).

The exhibitions will have a great success. Today, with the support of the MCCA, the Ministry of Gozo, St James Cavalier Centre for the creation and Vodafone, the collection comes on the land that inspired ...

Street "of Wolle" we do not see the end during the weekend. Bruges, a city room to squeeze through ... rinks and sculptures, and at the same time look for something set in the present art that is interesting. And passing over the Raaklijn, women Vynck suspended, lowered a series of travel photos of the Bauhaus, one arrives at the Art-O-Nivo for calligraphy and purified glass.

Every month, we walk through the choice of design Calebert, we climb the stairs to the black metal white rectangle of the exhibition space that was once called "Art-O-Nivo." Level of art, then, and even a very high level, as suggested by the pun, always in line with the craft of choice is sold in the attractive ground floor. As these vessels oval eg, where you can keep the same time coffee and filters! A curious German suddenly let down the lid of the pot, fortunately without much damage. Beautiful, certainly, but perhaps not really practical.

Moreover, there is always some tension in the air there, I think. Not least in the rain. These crowds admire these things beautiful, unique, fragile knowing (Anything of value is defenseless ...).

We have seen recently owl imitations of what is known more conventionally insulated thermos. The optician and designer Patrick Hoet Bruges had an affinity with the little black mug.

Gallery Art-O-Nivo follows a clear line and pay attention to excess. Generally it is profitable but often this art-pure isanat going a little heat.

That may be why we were charmed by this time the warm ardor that seems reflected in calligraphy on display. On the one hand there is the work of the young Belgian glass Edith Deceuninck, which varies the circles and squares in a very subtle with a glass of pure glass without color. Intelligent!

On the other hand, Michel d'Anastasio, a young Maltese living in Paris, admired a particular calligraphy. His work is a tribute to his home country, Malta, then there is the reflection warm, contagious colors and remarkable texture.

In 1989, when he was then a good twenty years, Michel d'Anastasio obtains a special box with feathers and a book: his very first steps into the world of calligraphy. For years, he will practice for hours a day in total silence. Only when in his opinion it starts to walk he chose as the theme for three articles of the Declaration of Human Rights.

In subsequent years, his zeal and a number of meetings will continue to develop his style. So he has many contacts with Chinese calligraphers and it will work intensively with renowned calligrapher French Claude Mediavilla.

But Anastasio will also develop a technique of calligraphy for left, so that poetry acquires a corner to himself in his work. He continues, passionate, to experiment with colors and materials.

In 1996, nicknamed "CocaPen" (manufactured in effect with a can of Coke), leads to a particular style of writing is one of Anastasio emploit today.

Added to the pigments and the use of sand as a medium, it is the crux of his work. Until the end of January even at the Art-O-Nivo.
